It's snowing, it's really snowing...It may be the middle of April but it's snowing in Yerevan. Okay it was only for a few hours but still, I got to see snow for the first time in my life. It was the greatest thing to wake up to...
Monday was a day of new experiences. Being a national holiday means I had the day off from work. Always a good thing. So we decided to go to the Parajanov museum. The museum has a fantastic location right across from the Hrazdan Stadium giving it some great views. I wasn't really sure what to expect of the museum, but it was a really funky, eccentric place. Like organized chaos. Imagine a mishmash of junk ranging from broken glass and plates to sequins, sparkles and buttons all jumbled together. But the finished product was amazing. I usually can't stand the pack rat thing, but this was the coolest pack rat experience ever. I just wanted to take everything back home with me. Parajanov himself reminds me a lot of Hemingway, they look like brothers and pimp-daddys.
The museum has everything you can imagine from art and sculpture to collages made of broken glass, hats, self portraits, photographs and some scary looking dolls. It's a real sensory experience. He even has a variation of Mona Lisa's. As the museum caretaker explained to us, his inspiration for the Mona Lisas was a tattoo that he saw on a fellow prisoners back. Depending on how the light would hit the tattoo, the Mona Lisa would change shape to look like a man, a woman, and various other things. From there, Parajanov went on to create his own variations of it.
I can say that the Parajanov Museum is now one of my favorite places in Yerevan.
(Images from top: the pimp daddy himself, Melody in the entryway of the museum, the tamer first floor, my friend Mr. Whitey, isn't that a freaky head, the organized chaos I was talking about, one of my favorite scary dolls, the variation of Mona Lisas, his blue period, your truly with the caretaker of the museum, snow- I was so excited I had to take a picture)!
